 Coloured History of Lacombe lodging
In the late 1800’s, before Lacombe was even deemed village status, there was a shack on a dusty trail near what is now Lacombe. Situated between Calgary and Edmonton, it was a welcoming stop over for travelers trekking from the larger outposts to hang their hat. The dusty trail became known in 1884 as the C & E Trail, and today is Hwy 2A. The shack was more like a bed & breakfast lodging that we know today since it was part of a residence. In 1896 Lacombe became just the eighth organized community of the Northwest Territories to be declared a village, so settlers believed the town was in for a substantial growth influx and required more lodging. Today if one is looking for a place to stay in Lacombe there are four hotels, one motel and a handful of bed & breakfasts in the town, and several more in the immediate vicinity.

Weeding out the unsavory visitors
Once the status of village occurred, Lacombe established a temporary lodging for people looking to make Lacombe their home. Today a newer hotel has been on the same site as Immigration Hall, which was built and served as the lodging relief until local housing could be erected. There was already a hotel in town which also served patrons with a bar. Although Lacombe had lost out to Red Deer as the primary town for central Alberta, town businessmen realized they would still get their fair share of settlers. Once the train arrived a self-appointed immigration officer would check out the would-be settlers to the area. The local lodge, Immigration Hall, was filled with visitors the town wanted to keep.

Build it and they come to stay over
The Victoria Hotel was Lacombe’s main hotel. It was steadily busy, with several renovations and additions, and by 1901 had grown to become one of the largest buildings in Lacombe. The entrance was large and open so a rider could gallop up the street and right into the main lobby without barely breaking stride. Accommodations in Lacombe today aren’t quite as inviting to people on horseback, but as with the old hotel is ideal for those looking for a place to stay. Today’s hotels in Lacombe have restaurants, bars and room service making for a more enjoyable stay.

B&B’s the relaxing choice
There will always be those who prefer the privacy of a hotel in Lacombe, with luxuries such as in-room Jacuzzis, room service, lounges and facilities for weddings. However, a growing trend for an alternative relaxing accommodation is a Bed & Breakfast, or B&B for short. Bed & Breakfast accommodations in Lacombe are serene getaways with amenities of your own home such as homemade breakfasts. A charming atmosphere within walking distance from golfing, lakes, sightseeing and cross-country skiing is an inviting way to spend a few days. Many have theme rooms, such as rustic, western or contemporary depending on your preference. Today there are plenty of accommodations in Lacombe to choose from.
